I like my Kirby Gen IV self propelled. I think it's about 20 years old now and still looks and works like new. I have maintained it well over the years, new belts and a couple of new brushes, new impellar once. I would much rather have a Bag type vacuume. They are much less messy to maintain IMO.
If you are not set on a brand new one, visit a local sweeper repair shop and ask about new or refurbished units. We got Grandma a re built Kirby just like mine a few years ago for $300. They had others there to choose from as well.

Edit to add:
Wife has one of these http://www.oreck.com/Deluxe-Handheld-Vacuum-Cleaner in her craft room that we use for quick dusting and crumb pick up. It's pretty handy.
