west central Iowa
Our cows and calves get silage on corn stalks prior to weaning. We feed calves silage and ground ear corn at weaning. Our smaller calves would be around 400#, when weaned in Dec. We sometimes sort these smaller calves off and give more GEC to help keep them warm. Calves get 3/4-1# of 40-20 plain protein and seem to get along fine. I don't have any experience with DDG. It seems like the longer the calves eat silage with the cows the easier weaning is on them.
