I agree, we seem to talk about protein, protein, protein all winter but for beef cows it seems like protein is not as big of an issue in northern winters as TDN.

It was also surprising that even at about $6.40/bu local cash corn it still makes sense to use shelled corn to make up any TDN deficiency because it doesn't take very much since corn has such a high TDN. I think in his example it only took 2.5 lb/day with the poorer than average hay.

The OSU program was very helpful in understanding hay test results and relating that to what a cow needs.
