Larry, did she happen to have a floppy or flash drive, or something else in the computer at the time of shutdown? The only time my laptop has even wanted to start in safe mode is when I had left my flash drive plugged in or one of our PCMCIA cards in the hole. Remove any and all accessories and re-boot.
