Subject: Annual Pasture

What can a guy plant for an annual pasture forage in NE Iowa? I got a 5 ac plot I need to graze for 1 yr.

Welters Seed in Onslow, IA recommends an oat/turnip/clover mix in the spring then no til in sudangrass. I'm ok with it all except the sudangrass part because of nitrate poisoning. The cattle grazing it I will be custom feeding, so don't want to run the risk of losing some due to nitrates. I also winter cattle over in this field so any left over stubble would be consumed.

Is there anything I can plant in the spring....be done and rotational graze it all summer? Or should I just plant 2 crops of oats?

Jake
