You can't do both.  You can search by date or you can search for post made in the last year.  The search only returns one page of results.  If what are you looking for does not appear on that page you need to further limit your search scope (maybe limit it to one forum).  The search is working.  You just need to play with it some to learn how to get what you are looking for.
