| We getting sick of fighting the mud while feeding steers inside the lot.
Background info - buy at 500lbs, finish to 1300-1400lbs
Location - NESD
The plan is to pour 12 - 16ft (undecided) pad for steers to stand on and eat, plus enough on the other side of the fence to have one tractor tire on while feeding, plus room for the feed.
I have seen where instead of concrete feedbunks, people put a guardrail right on the concrete, on the lot side of a railroad tie. Above that, put two guardrail panels on the outside of the railroad ties to act as fence. This allows the calves to reach through and get feed, but keep them in the lot. The feed would be right on the ground. We are also planning on puttin an edge (6" or so) about 12" into the lot side to stop the steers from backing up to the bunk and making a mess.
Basically what I am looking for is some dimensions on how high to put the upper two guardrails above the lower guardrail to allow enough room to eat, but not enough to escape, while taking into account different animal sizes. Also, do you have any other suggestions? Am I way off base? Also, pictures would be great. | |
