Canada being an ex British dominion, mining, oil and gas rights are separate from land ownership like in Australia. If you own land, any oil, gase or mineral found underground is technically not yours. And any company that owns mineral or oil claims on your land can expropriate part of your land to exploit the resources. They must offer an adequate compensation, but never enough for the trouble they cause you. There's a huge debate right now in Quebec about the exploitation of shale gas. They found huge reserves of gas in the St-Lawrence Lowlands. However many oppose gas extraction on the grounds that it is environmentally damaging and that farmers will be expropriated (this is the most productive agricultural area of the province). In the end money shouldn't be able to buy everything. The risks of aquifer contamination are far too great.
