I used some mechanical fingers to pull a straw out that I had dropped. On most tanks if you keep the canister in the neck while getting a straw out it pretty much eliminates the chance of accidentally dropping a straw in the tank. If you don't have mechanical fingers you might make a snare with a piece of tubing and some wire.
