I don't see any way that HSR can ever have the ridership levels comparable to any major highway between two large cities. Nor can it compare to most major airports if you are comparing apples to apples, ie, look at the number of routes into and out of airports compared to the single route for a HSR. The only area where HSR is feasible is when you have highly populated regions that are relatively close together such as along the East coast, etc. When I hear govt people suggesting that it would work for Mpls to Chicago.....I think they need to have their heads examined. Even if they had thousands of riders/day I don't think it would ever cash-flow. The cost to build HSR from Mpls to Chicago is astronomical. Amtrak isn't even profitable and that uses existing infrastructure. Would it be nice, sure, but I don't want to pay for it.
