| Aurora usually comes from solar flares associated with sun spots. The sun has been quiet for a couple years. There was a solar flare reported a couple weeks ago but it missed the earth and the aurora didn't get enhanced much. http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/pmap/index.html is a good site to watch to know when to look for aurora. I've seen aurora as far south as St. Louis MO, but that was very unusual. From Central Iowa its more common, but most common north of 55 degrees.
