Subject: Dog saves soldier's life in Afghanistan, put to sleep by accident in America

Eastern Iowa
I know bureaucratic ineptitude is all around us, but this SHOULD NOT have happened.

Heroic soldier's dog, brought from Afghanistan, is accidentally euthanized by Phoenix animal shelter

This is Target. She was a stray dog in Afghanistan who some American soldiers took under their wing when she was found hanging around their base. She later returned the favor by alerting the soldiers to the presence of a suicide bomber who was trying attempting to detonate himself inside a building. When she snapped and barked at him, he was unable to get inside, and detonated himself in a doorway. Five men were injured, but the dog was credited with saving their lives.

One of the soldiers brought the dog home with him after his time in Afghanistan. When she got out of the yard and went missing, he found her picture on the county shelter's website. Because it was late on Saturday and the shelter was closed, the owner decided to pick her up Monday morning. When he went to pick her up, less than 72 hours after she had gone missing, they had already euthanized her by mistake.

Mistakes happen. I understand that. But this pooch and his family really deserved better.
