Subject: Backgrounding Operation

Looking at possibly backgrounding a few calves annually. Do you guys that background cattle constantly have cattle trickle through your lots year round or do you buy buy buy certain months so it's more or less an all in all out operation? Seems the later would be best from a management standpoint. Are you buying at sale barns or direct off the farm?

What would a cost effective ration be composed of in Iowa to gain say 2 lb/day? I have shelled corn, oats, grass and alf/grass hay, and cornstalk bales at my disposal. Could make Corn Silage or Sorghum Sudan Silage and double crop ryelage. Prefer using baleage over loose silage as far as handling it goes. Can I get by without a TMR for say 60-80 hd annually or would the TMR be a good investment? Could possibly do loose silage if I bought a TMR. If I rotationally gazed during summer what supp. would I be needing?

I have fenceline J bunks. How much bunk space/hd and how many sq ft/hd of housing for winter w/ outdoor access?

Jake
