One thing about typical January weather. I think most cattle can endure -20 degree dry cold winter weather much better than +20 in late fall/early winter with freezing wet sloppy conditions. I think it was Mark who mentioned in another thread somewhere to the effect that if they have managed to live this long they will probably make it.

It can be plenty dusty in lots in January in winter when there is no snow on the ground. Under those conditions, calves will do better running out on grass even though it is brown. My calves are only shut in the lot until they get over weaning. Then they run out all winter and only come back to the lot for water or grain.
