Subject: Freon leak in milk tank: Repair or replace?

northeastern Ohio

14 year old 2000 gallon tank has developed an internal leak in one of the plates.  We have not cut it open yet, but suspect a spot weld has broke (leak is not near any of the internal connections).

My service guy estimates the repair to cost around $2000.  A new tank would cost $30,000 (does not include compressors, washer or controls).

Does anyone have any experience with the longevity of repairing a tank?  My service guy is not putting much of a guarantee on the repair (I think he said 24 hour guarantee!!!).

I asked about installing a chiller and using the existing tank as a storage-only tank.  My dealer did not think it would be feasible on my size of operation and quoted me a price of $15,000 for the chiller.  This sounds better than a new tank to me.....

Does anyone have experience with the guy that advertises in the Hoard's Dairyman (Milk Tank Freon Repair, call 1-800.....)?
