| It seems that the excess soil mositure caused the problem by limiting root growth due to oxygen depravation. the excess water caused the Nitrogen to leach, which wasn't really the limiting factor since the root system was so underdeveloped it couldn't pull the necessary nutrients to sustain ear growth. Corn following corn showed the worst problem as it was the slowest to warm up and dry out this spring. Additionally, the corn fodder further limited root growth and ear girth development.
I don't have this completely proven in my mind yet, but am gaining confidence w/ more studying. Once again a PROPERLY tiled field pays dividends. Too bad I don't have many of them... | |
