As to the original question, having the copper ring is the way to go. We now use a butane torch type dehorner, and it takes about 10sec if done right. I also recommend local anesthetic. My brother got us started doing that a number of years ago, we mix a sedative with an anesthetic, the calves are much easier to dehorn properly, and can't hurt to make them feel better afterwards.
