There was recently a report of the high number of sunspots that might cause some communications problems. I don't think those problems happened, but sunspots are strongly linked to temperatures over time at least. (edited to say)
They are doing experiments now, and I'm not sure how immediate the effects might be, but I thought the extreme plasma clouds (that allowed northern lights to be seen in michigan) correlated with the record high temps ... but I'm not really sure if that is the correct correlation.
