Subject: RE: Natural Farrowing System

West Central IA
I pasture farrowed for about 8 years. The weather can be your friend or your enemy. Always too hot, too cold, too dry or too wet. I ran 40 to 60 sows depending on the circumstance. Farrowed on a new pasture with electric fence, waterers on a wooden 10 X 16 skid. self feeders and Porta huts. Put up a hoop barn at the end and realized the best system is the hoop barn. If you want to farrow year round, put up 4 buildings, gestate in one, farrow in the next and never move the small pigs. move the sows to the next building. Run 3 groups and in winter use the huts in the building. In warmer weather and seasoned sows you can just tip big bales and let them free range farrow. 8.5 pig average finished last time I did this and had a full time job in town. Not much smell or expense. First time post, hope I didn't bore you too much.
