| While not Illinois Steve, I can tell you that I have been in my fields. What I have seen makes for loss of sleep and a bad feeling in the stomach. Name any disease you can for corn - it is there. While I saw signs of some N loss before tassle, the rate at which it seemed to cause the plants to start canabalizing was amazing and the crop was at a stage when there was little you could do about it. Here in EC Il we have had very few breaks from saturated soil and while I have never had a problem with N loss from fall applied N with N serve, this year is showing that it can happen. If you flew over my fields they probably would still look nearly perfect - not the case inside them. At the same time I think there will be great yields in the area - mostly dependent upon timing of N application. I have done test strips with adding N sidedressed before and saw no economic benefit - had it ever gotten dry enough this year it would have paid big time. | |
