New Mexico | example: take your 400 # black hiefers at say $525 in, make em weigh 1,400 out at $1, = $1,400 per.
1,000 lbs of gain middle with 500 lbs of that grass gain at 40 cents, then 500 lbs old style feedlot gain at 70 cents, = $550 gain cost total.
Looks like $325 gross profit, ie or $200 Net, Net, Net.
OR push em hard on a grass natural program ( with a touch of ddg's added ), make em weigh 1,100 by fall at $1.25 out ( $1,375 per ) and they'll gross profit $500, ie or $400 Net, Net, Net.
Yearlings here happen to be the bargain, ie 650 to 7 weights at 98 to 108 ( approx same gross In cost as some of the 5 wt steer calves ) .
Grass fever still, so everyone wants calves ( grass fever will be all over in 2 weeks and calves will cheapen up $10 to $15 cwt on into May ).
Good young heavy bred cows in the $900 to $1,000 range, decent young pairs with big calves in the $1,000 to $1,200 range.
