Subject: Lactating cows on corn question

Driftless SW Wisconsin

Tim, If I can get about 3 lb/day on these guys in corn that is about 1 lb/day of beef in the split half boxes so they are making money with almost no additional cost.

But you got me thinking, if I can add lactating cow/calf pairs to the group and accelerate the gain on the calves that would be another boost. It would also use up my corn productively. I'd probably put out a bale of hay in a ring in the middle of the stalks too.

But I have never put lactating cows on standing corn.

Do you or others feed lactating cows corn? Are there any potential problems to be aware of?
