In reproduction class we were told it's best to use on heifers and what your jockey said makes sense to me as far as economics go for the rest.

The sexed semen is just the left over bulls typically. It is quite a proccess to sort from what i understand and lot of waste is the result. Often times the bulls that are the "best" genetically aren't sorted because their semen sells so fast in large quantities. The bulls that they use to sexed semen are often highly fertile. They will have greater motility and excellent numbers for sperm counts. They use the bulls with the better sperm to try and compensate for putting less semen in the straw. It wouldn't be affordable if they put the same numbers in sexed semen and regular semen straws.
