central - east central Minnesota - | That's pretty cool . . . . On the mighty Mississippi River, at Monticello Mn, there's a gal that started feeding a couple swans several yrs ago. Now there are hundreds and maybe even thousands of swans at one point or another during the winter season. The river is open during the winter months, due to the power generating plants dumping their cooling water back into the river. During the past many winters, we had little snow pack - and the untilled corn / bean fields around the area were easy food sources for the birds (along with the swan lady feeding them). This winter the snow came and has stay (generally blows away and a few sunny days melt off the high spots) - snow pack is pretty consistant at 8-10 inchs or so. Heck, even the squirrals and bunnies are haveing a hard time finding food digging through the snow. The swan lady is going through lots of corn this season. She gets a gravity box load at a time . . . Here is a link that shows several pic's of Monticello's / Mississippi river's swans - http://www.monticelloarts.org/swans/index.html |
