| There are 2 common ways to configure an IP address. Static and DHCP. Static just means that your IP address in your router always stays the same. DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. If your router is set to DHCP an address then it will attempt to get one automatically from your ISP. I looked on the Hughes web site and it looks like they have dynamic addresses.
Try typing ipconfig /all in the cmd window. This will give you detailed information about your network connection. On the line where it reads dhcp enabled check if it has yes or no beside it. Do this on the desktop and the laptop. If you have your wireless turned on or your wireless card in the laptop it may give you info for both the local area connection and the wireless connection.
