I disagree.  Using anything other then the actual value of the assets if liquidated today makes the balance sheet worthless.

What if you bought land for $1000 per acre in '79 and compiled a balance sheet in '86 when it was worth $300?   If you try to carry it on yoru balace sheet @ 1000, you are doing little more then lying.  It works both ways.
