Hagen Brothers farms,Goodrich ND | See if that intact carbon rod shows any sign of a little brass screw in one end. The old battery power telephone systems had 2-3 of those big dry cells in every home to power the telephone. They had a carbon rod about that size in the center with a little brass terminal to connect a wire.
The white powder may be from the paste electrolyte and outer zinc can used on those big cells.
