When a form field has been filled out once, the next time you fill it out all you need to do is start typing and what you filled in before appears.
If a form field on one page has the same name as a form field on another web page such as "First" for a field you'd be entering your first name in, then when you are on any form that has that field name "First" you can get it filled quickly by typing a couple letters and choosing a previous first name with those starting letters from the list that drops down. It saves me a lot of typing especially in email address fields.
Sometimes it remembers things you might want private so it can be a detriment. My son was using my brothers computer for Hotmail and when he typed "hey" in the subject line he saw some interesting things my brother had typed. Nothing real bad but we had a good laugh and he was rather embarrassed.
