Eastern Iowa | Beef prices such as these are not unheard of in larger cities.
A frined from suburban Chicago buys beef "on the hoof" from me, has it processed locally, and makes the 6 hour round trip to take it back with him. My friend insists it is still better beef for a much lower price, and is constantly encouraging me to go into business filling this niche.
Of course, a retail beef business in Chicago would be subject to different rules than our transaction, that would make it a much less interesting opportunity. And I am quite busy enough losing money feeding out the cattle that are here!
