Subject: More on combine attitude and yield map color stripping

Centre county Pennsylvania, USA
In a thread below on this subject Travis Green provided a link that talks about effects of sloping fields on yield monitor accuracy, here is link to Travis's post:

Our fields here are rich in sloping terrain features and our corn yield maps often show significant color stripping that seems to be correlated with combine attitude (slope from level) in those fields. To verify that we used first differences in the DGPS 3D positions to compute and map combine attitude. We then used that combine attitude map to compensate yield maps for what appeared to be terrain feature induced yield monitor errors. The 3 attached graphics include a combine attitude (slope from level) map, a yield map, and a combine attitude compensated yield map for one of our 2006 corn fields. We were pleased to see that the combine attitude compensated yield map had significantly less color stripping than did the the uncompensated yield map.

Legends on both yield maps show average yield for positive (uphill) slopes and average yield for negative (downhill) slopes. We were also pleased to see that average yields for positive and negative attitude (slope) are much closer in the compensated yield map than they are in the uncompensated yield map.

We ran attitude compensated yield maps for all of our 2006 corn fields, they all showed similar improvements over their uncompensated yield maps. Our bean yield maps almost never seem to show much color stripping. When we tried to compensate bean yield maps with combine attitude maps, color stripping increased. Don't know why but our yield monitor(s) seem to respond to combine attitude differently in corn than they do in beans here in our terrain featured fields.
