Subject: A peculiar question for Canadian.

East central Iowa

I know this is a little off perhaps.

I remember reading that in Canada you have a very, ah calm bird that's protected.  It's apparently easy to catch.  The reason I was told that it's protected is if people get lost in the wilderness this bird is a food source.

When I was in Florida I spent some time with some Canadians many years ago and was sorely disappointed by the vast knowledge they held regarding the USA.  Meanwhile I don't think a lot of people on the beach could find Canada on a map.

So, is there such a bird, is it protected, is the story true?
