Hydraulic drives helps singulate seed better. Smoother meter operation vs ground drive with variable slip. Yes the variable rate is worth it as well and you can use the hydraulic motor as section control. My old planter ran 3 hydraulic motors so I could plant 4/8/12/16 rows.
With electric drive each meter can turn on/off independently along with turn compensation and row by row VR vs larger sections like hyd drive has.
