Is(was) this a denial of service(DOS) by flooding the server with overwhelming hits? That is a federal offense with up to 5 yrs and 250,000 fine. Pretty serious crime which if investigated by the FBI can probably be traced. Most end up in as originating in foreign countries(think Russia) but this one I'm not so sure.
