Subject: RE: Planting beans into VT corn stalks

Southwestern Ontario
I tried this last year and compared two fields. One was worked in spring with s time and the other we planted straight into. We saw about a 5bu difference working in spring vs just fall vt. Ground conditions made all the difference. After we vt’d in the fall, the ground really sealed off and got super hard for some reason. It also stayed rough and never mellowed out.

This made the planting into the fall vt rough as hell. Row units bouncing all around and beans not planted very uniform. This made the beans come up about a week or two later than the spring s tine and even at that weren’t uniform. I suppose it may depend on the year and the ground type but we decided if we were gonna vt cornstalks in the fall we’d better get ready to do it in the spring again.
