El Chichón erupted in '82. I remember the brown haze in the sky when you looked into the distance.
Despite being the biggest eruption of the 20th century to that point, no global cooling was measured.
A decade later, when Mt. Pinatubo erupted, a half-degree of global cooling was observed.
