There are several "videos" on Utube where a narrator is reading the diary or written recollections of German POWs. One I recall starts with him being in the POW camp near the front and then being in trucks to the coast and put on a ship to the US. From there, train across the country and then in a camp for the duration. In many of these, it does not seem like they were too strictly guarded, at least once on the ship over and in the US. I suppose the thinking was where would they go? And likely get captured by civilians too if they got out of the camp.

EDIT, this reminded me of my Dad mentioned someone from our town who was a POW in Germany. Most of the folks in town were from Norwegian or Swedish immigrants. This person learned some German in the camp and could talk with my grandma in German. Grandma was born in the US but her parents were from a German ethnic area of Austria and spoke some dialect. I remember her in the phone talking to her sister in German occasionally.
