Subject: Double crop grain sorghum

Penn Yan, NY
I am thinking about double cropping by some grain sorghum after barley. Should have it planted by July 1st and our first frost is usually October 20th or later. I think I would plant the shortest maturity I can find and hope to have it off in mid October so I can plant a winter grain after.

Could either be a white or red variety, white is worth more than red but sounds like it could be a bit trickier

Higher moisture doesn’t bother me to terribly, we have plenty of drying capacity and it’s a good food grade market, sounds like around $12/bu picked up

A couple of questions:

-How hungry is grain sorghum if we are only shooting for 60-70bpa?

-Will we run into allelopathy issues trying to no till triticale into standing sorghum stubble and then flailing the stubble afterward?

-We have a flex Draper with air reel and a 653a. Which would be better for harvest?

-anything else I should worry about?
