It depends on your investment strategy.

GLD is great (and SLV for silver) if you want to jump into gold/silver price exposure, and then back out again in a couple weeks or a couple months. These are ETFs so you can buy/sell with zero or near zero brokerage fees.

If you are planning to store wealth in gold for years, then I prefer to buy physical gold/silver and hold it in a safe place (bank safe deposit box, etc.) With physical gold, there is an extra cost for manufacturing the coin or bar, plus a markup by the dealer you buy from. Also a discount from spot when you sell it to a dealer. These are not very significant costs if you plan to hold the gold for multiple years though.
