How would calving on grass help calves from coming backwards or other random problems that just naturally comes with having calves? We have very little problems calving in March maybe only have to help 5% in some way unless it’s really muddy which isn’t too often, couple sheds really makes a huge difference 30 degrees and being dry is wayyy better than 30 and soaking wet.
They always say the cow getting exercise by walking around the pasture feeding herself grazing or eating unrolled hay, etc. helps them position the calf better *most* of the time rather than locked up in confinement. Idk it does seem like guys that don't lock them up to calve have way less issues than the guys locking them up in the barn lot. That being said when i'm calving i do the normal chores like always checking before work then i do go back out and check each herd after work in case there's something weird going on. That and it's easier to tag a <12 hr old calf than a 24hr+ old calf. |
