Im guessing you have a warning buzzer going off all the time and low voltage. I’m pretty certain that I’ve jumped from positive to that field terminal with engine running at a fast idle to get one going.

However, I would first try shorting it to the ground terminal and see if that does anything. I doubt it’ll change anything at all, but I would just scrape a jumper across the terminals. Just enough to make a spark should do it if it’s going to do anything.

If that has no effect/doesn’t make a spark, then try the positive. I think you’ll get a spark and if the alternator is good, you’ll get at least a flash of voltage out of it. I’ve seen them that had been sitting a while that just needed flashing and then they worked correctly after that. If the regulator is external and it’s bad or the wiring is bad, you may have to keep the jumper making contact to keep it charging.

If neither way makes any difference I would take alternator apart looking for stuck brushes etc.
