I built one in high school. I bought a 1978 microbus as a drivetrain donor and found an old frame in the nickel ads I was able to modify to work. Took it to our local dunes a lot, and made one trip to the Oregon dunes.
Probably the most fun I had with it was during assembly when one evening a cousin and I first got the engine running in the rail frame. It wasn’t close to finished otherwise, seats weren’t installed and it had no foot controls at all. We hot wired it, threw the seats loosely in the frame, rolled it outside, hooked a wire marking flag to the throttle, started it in gear and off we went. I was in the drivers seat steering and my cousin in the passenger seat had the wire flag throttle. Entertainment before safety when no one person is driving and there’s no good way to stop.
