| The main reason that calcium moves more quickly down through the soil profile after gypsum application (as compared to an application of ag lime) is that gypsum (hydrated calcium sulfate) is much more soluble than ag lime (calcium carbonate).
Ag lime (calcium carbonate) undergoes a chemical reaction with sulfur oxides during the scrubbing (flue gas desulfurization) process at coal fired power plants that results in FGD gypsum (aka synthetic gypsum).
The end product FGD gypsum is chemically transformed... it is not ag lime covered with S, it is a new compound (hydrated calcium sulfate, CaSO4-2H20) that is much more soluble than calcium carbonate.
