Subject: Gravel binder ...bentonite?

Northeast Missouri
We install Cobett waterers with a gravel pad around them, using 1"- or 3/4"- gravel with fines so it packs. But eventually the cows wear down (scatter) the gravel.

I was wondering if there's anything I could mix with the gravel to make it hold together longer.

Bentonite clay is good at sealing leaks (used in pond dams, etc.). Anybody tried mixing it with gravel to help the gravel hold together? (I'd think it would make the gravel pad more impervious to water, and that way maybe reduce the gravel breakup due to freezing/thawing.)
