NC KS | Self tapping screws and oilfield pipe will be an exercise infrustration for me. If not held perfect on a round surface, screw goes zinging off or bit gets dulled off before hole gets made. Rent or borrow a welder or hire one and weld clips on. 2 7/8 will work good. 2 3/8 will also work unless there is a lot of pressure on it.
Drilling vs driving the posts depends on your soil and equipment. Our soils are not very drive friendly.
