| I will second that you need to watch how wet it makes your ration. We make haylage. It’s my favourite way to harvest thick first cut alfalfa. It is also the most difficult silage to put up and feed out. If you don’t let it wilt enough, it’s too wet and your pile is a mess. Too much, leaf loss, hard to blow, hard to pack. Knowing how long to leave it takes a bit of learning.
It doesn’t fit our backgrounding ration really well, but we can make work for wintering cows. It also tends to grow well on some of our arable land that struggles with salt. We cut it with a 35’ windrower. I’d like to have a disc mower with a crimper and merge behind. Seems like this would make the harvesting timing easier and feed the chopper better. | |
