We have lost many thousands of acres of trees, mostly from development and disease problems.
Competition from imported fruit has gotten very tough, forcing growers to sell.Land prices have sky- rocketed .
Many fresh fruit packing houses have closed, and much OJ concentrate is imported from Brazil by ship.
That being said, there are several cold- tolerant varieties that are being grown on small a scale as far north as South Carolina,developed by U. of Florida to withstand freezing temperatures. Grown north of traditional citrus belt .
These newer , small farms are filling a niche market for very high quality fruit, but many larger groves have disappeared, to be replaced by homes.
