What we call a pine straw snake hangs around and under mulch or damp straw, is about 8-10” long, smooth brown color, when exposed to light will try to bury himself, if the snake doesn’t try to hide its more likely a small cottonmouth

The attached pic is what the cat found a few days ago, it’s zoomed big but snake 8” long, the markings are not solid brown, looks somewhat checkered like cottonmouth
