Subject: Nutrient overload

Pittsburg, Kansas
Air will not do much good. Voice of experience here. That said aeration does lots of other good things. Been aerating a 3 acre pond probably 10 years. Also a couple smaller ones.

Pond dye will work. Has to be done early in the season before the problem is noticeable. Starts on the bottom shallow water at spring warm up. Have to shade it out before it gets started. I did dye three or four years, 3 acre pond. Used chemical around the edge a few years. All of it works somewhat if started early and keep after it.

But it is all treating the symptoms of the problem. Excess nutrients in the water is the root cause.

Have a flock of geese on the pond? Or herd of cattle? Going to have either weed or algae issues (unless the cattle stir up enough mud to shade the water - free pond dye). Two different problems with different treatments, but both caused by excessive nutrient load. Fix one symptom and the other rears its ugly head next year.

Solve the nutrient problem and the root cause is addressed.

Easier said than done.
