I second the monocular for occasional use and being truly pocket size.
You can get a monocular with far better optics for the price than binoculars. Not only are there only half as many lenses, there isn't a need to keep two separate sets of optics in alignment and in focus with each other.

However, a monocular is not for 'glassing' the hills, it is just to zoom in on something you saw. Use more than a couple minutes at a time can lead to eye strain. Use binoculars for that.
