Right or wrong, that's how it is. Only chance you may have is if you can undoubtedly prove that you were injured with lingering issues during a drill period. I spent 8 years active duty with two combat tours and it was still an act of diligence and patience to get benefits for things that had solid documentation in my active duty record. Took nearly 14 months and repeated exams by independent contractors who were lackluster at best, despite having solid treatment records for same for over a decade since discharge. I never sought it out because I didn't think I "earned" it, but years later when working in an environment where I learned so many received benefits for things they went into the service with and didn't disclose, I got over my self-imposed unworthiness. Glad I did, within 24 months of filing, an old back injury reared it's ugly head and put me in a walker for awhile, and luckily they've been on top of it. I still see my regular doctor and specialists because I have good insurance, and I still wholeheartedly feel that the VA healthcare system (at least in the Nashville/Louisville region pretty much sucks. |
